Tokenisation in the financial markets
Festival of Fintech 2024
Tokenisation, or the representation of assets in the form of digital tokens, typically using blockchain or distributed ledger technology (DLT) is an area increasingly being explored by fintechs and financial institutions keen to take advantage of stated efficiencies such as reduced settlement time and avoidance of the need for manual reconciliation.
As part of our recent International Festival of Fintech experts from BlackRock, HQLAᵡ, Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan joined us to discuss tokenisation across financial services, sharing their insights and experience of pioneering platforms and issuances to discuss the current market state and how it is likely to develop.
Topics discussed include:
- The different forms that tokenisation can take and the different ways that blockchain or DLT can be utilised, along with the benefits.
- How DLT is already being used for primary issuances and secondary market post-trade settlement, collateral and custody, and how this will develop.
- Sell side vs buy side perspectives.
- How the challenge of achieving interoperability between platforms along with the integration with traditional systems is being addressed.
- Legal and regulatory challenges to be addressed, including cross-border and documentation considerations.
- On-chain settlement assets considerations.
- Potential of tokenisation for the funds industry.
- How market participants can best prepare for the integration of tokenisation and DLT into their operations.
