Global crypto – lessons learned from market distress
Festival of Fintech 2024
While cryptoasset market conditions seem to have improved (for now), what lessons have been learned from the turbulent period seen in 2022-23 where we saw high-profile insolvencies of significant market participants including, notably, FTX.
As part of our recent International Festival of Fintech Chris Farmer (Teneo) and Professor Louise Gullifer KC (Hon) (The University of Cambridge) joined us to consider the key issues for crypto market participants that have arisen as companies have been wound down, and what steps businesses, regulators and other market participants should be taking to protect themselves against future liquidity and solvency concerns.
Topics discussed include:
- Lessons learned from early high-profile crypto insolvencies including 3 Arrows and GateCoin, for crypto firms and their advisors and counterparties, as well as insolvency practitioners.
- The challenges of liquidating digital assets in practice.
- Role of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law.
- The role of technology and how NFT airdrops can be used in insolvency proceedings.
- Future market developments and anticipated changes to the legal landscape.

- Chris Farmer, Senior Managing Director, Teneo (BVI) Limited
- Professor Louise Gullifer KC (Hon) Rouse Ball Professor of English Law, The University of Cambridge
