The EU's AI Act: What do we know about the critical political deal?

The EU institutions have finally reached a political agreement on the EU's landmark Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), following the conclusion of their fifth and final round of negotiations late on 8 December.

This is a crucial milestone and a decisive step for the regulation of AI worldwide. The significance of this achievement should not be underestimated, no matter the work and efforts remaining to reach adoption of the AI Act. As the key stakeholders work to finalise a complete, consolidated final text for approval, we share some initial thoughts and takeaways on some key aspects of the political agreement.
