Online payments are accelerating, not least as a result of coronavirus-related lifestyle changes.

Though most transactions go through without problems, the vast volume of transactions and money now changing hands online means online payment systems are a constant target for crime and other subversive activity. How can digital payments be made safer? What could happen if they are not?

In this Zoom meeting, leading cryptologist and former PayPal Principal Scientist Dr Markus Jakobsson will discuss with Clifford Chance partners Sam Ward, a litigator, and Monica Sah, a financial regulation expert.

Speakers:

Dr Markus Jakobsson’s research is focused on fraud and malware; he has contributed to the knowledge of phishing, crimeware, mobile malware  and efficient cryptographic protocols. He is author of, among other books, “Phishing and Countermeasures” (2006). Markus is the inventor of more than a hundred U.S. patents and patent applications. He received his PhD in computer science from University of California at San Diego.

Markus is also the founder of the security startups RavenWhite and Fatskunk, the latter which was acquired by Qualcomm in 2013. He is Senior Director at Qualcomm, and has in the past held positions as Principal Scientist at PayPal, Principal Scientist at Palo Alto Research Center, Principal Research Scientist at RSA Security, Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Labs, Associate Professor at Indiana University, and Adjunct Associate Professor at New York University. He is a visiting research fellow of the Anti-Phishing Working Group, where he serves on the Wireless Device Fraud Working Group.

Sam Ward is a partner at Clifford Chance, where she has advised clients on a range of contentious domestic and cross border matters/investigations including those involving the FCA, Payment Systems Regulator, SFO, as well as antitrust authorities such as the European Commission and CMA.  In addition, Sam is a core member of the firm's Tech Group. Within this context, Sam regularly advises clients on data/cyber enforcement risk and effective incident response planning.  

Monica Sah is a partner at Clifford Chance specialising in financial markets law and regulation. Previously she was a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley and Head of Legal for International Wealth Management (Asia, EMEA and Australia). At the forefront of regulatory change issues for financial institutions, she is a leading figure on Brexit and MiFID2 issues from both the buy and sell side and has led the creation of Clifford Chance's Online Counsel Tool and MIFID2 Client Documentation Toolkit. She advises AFME's Brexit Repapering Forum and the Association of Global Custodians and is a member of the Financial Markets Law Committee and Scoping Forum on Banking.  

The event will be chaired by Elisabeth Braw, Senior Research Fellow at RUSI and director of its Modern Deterrence project.
