Space tech for smart cities

Smart cities are using technology to make cities faster, smarter, more efficient and sustainable. The market for smart city related services is growing fast, with the European Space Agency referencing a forecast growth of +57% between 2020-2025. Many of these smart city services and associated technology are heavily reliant, if not entirely dependent, on space tech. AI Series: Intellectual property and artificial intelligence – a review of new legal challenges

Our international team – Ling Ho, Violetta Kokolus, Don McCombie and Claudia Milbradt – focused on: (i) the IP infringement risks relating to the training of large language models and generative AI tools; (ii) potential IP infringement risks for the users of AI tools; and (iii) whether the outputs of generative AI can themselves be protected by copyright and patent rights.

The payments landscape is rapidly evolving as a growing number of jurisdictions consider the introduction of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the development of private-sector alternatives and significant regulatory changes. In this webinar, our international panel – Marc Benzler, Jane Chen, Laura Douglas, Jack Hardman and Young Kim – explored the impact of these changes across the globe including the legal challenges that must be addressed. Ethics Series / AI Series: Applied ethics and generative AI – challenges and prospects for businesses

Organised in conjunction with the Canary Wharf G30 Conduct and Culture Group and Canary Wharf Multifaith Chaplaincy, this session explored the ethical issues for businesses arising from the use of generative AI. The discussion moderated by Phillip Souta, Global Director of Tech Policy at Clifford Chance, focused on how to get the best out of the new technology given the various ethical challenges it presents around accuracy, consistency, plagiarism, breach of copyright, data privacy and confidentiality, deep fakes, cyber-attacks, hallucinations and inherent bias. It also looked to the impact on future generations, and the ethical implications of the changes that AI may bring on society.

Evolving cyber and operational resilience requirements across Europe

Significant new regimes for cybersecurity and digital operational resilience are coming into effect across Europe. In the EU, this includes NIS 2 which harmonises implementation of the EU’s existing cybersecurity framework, DORA, which addresses systemic cyber risks in the financial system and the Cyber Resilience Act. In the UK, there will be enhanced requirements for financial services under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2023. In this webinar, our expert panel featuring Dessislava Savova, Diego Ballon Ossio, Nadine Neumeier, Simon Persoff and Wouter van den Bosch, covered cyber requirements for companies across Europe, explored how these frameworks fit together and the impact on different sectors. They also provided some practical guidance on how to comply with these parallel and sometimes diverging requirements.

Louise is the first woman to be appointed to the prestigious role of Rouse Ball Professor of English law at Cambridge University.

MiCA - an overview

The European Parliament has approved the new Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MICA). MiCA will radically change the regulatory environment for crypto, establishing a broad regulatory framework for cryptoassets in the EU which introduces licensing of cryptoasset service providers and issuers. Certain provisions will apply from next year.
