Christopher is a senior associate in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution (L&DR) practice group based in Washington DC. His practice has focused on cross-border investigations and other representations of multinational corporations and financial institutions in high-stakes enforcement actions under US sanctions, anti-money laundering (AML), anti-corruption, and export control laws.
He can advise on diligence reviews of joint venture partners and M&A targets, internal investigations into potential misconduct, establishing and maintaining an effective whistleblowing program, supervising and managing cross-border litigation and investigation teams, and navigating a wide range of issues that might arise in disputes with US counterparties or involving a US nexus. His prior representations have entailed significant travel across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, which has been dedicated to on-the-ground client support and management of investigations teams.
- Represented Nordic multinational financial institution concerning a high-profile, cross-border, multi-agency investigation into alleged money laundering and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance deficiencies. Built and supervised a fact-finding infrastructure of approximately 150 attorneys, forensic accountants, and linguists involving millions of data records. Participated in witness interviews, productions and presentations to authorities, client briefings, and report drafting, culminating in comprehensive public report of findings. Traveled extensively to client operations in the Nordic region.
- Seconded to Europe-based multinational commodity trading and mining corporation to serve as acting head of its corporate whistleblowing and investigations program. Triaged and advised on new whistleblower reports, oversaw ongoing investigations across the enterprise, reported regularly to internal stakeholders and external parties on the state and effectiveness of the program, provided training to investigators and other stakeholders, participated in restructuring the program and the related review of its framework policies and procedures, coordinated with communications teams on program promotion and awareness, and ensured the successful transition of the role to the permanent program head. Relocated to Switzerland on a temporary basis.
- Represented German multinational financial institution concerning a cross-border multiagency investigation into alleged violations of US sanctions laws and regulations. Participated in fact-finding efforts, productions and presentations to authorities, client briefings, interviews, and report drafting. Traveled extensively to client operations in Germany.
- Represented UAE-based multinational financial institution concerning a cross-border multi-agency investigation into alleged violations of US sanctions laws and regulations. Built fact-finding infrastructure and managed fact-finding teams. Participated in witness interviews, client briefings, productions and presentations to US authorities, and report drafting. Traveled extensively to client operations in UAE.
- Represented Japan-based multinational financial institution concerning a cross-border investigation into alleged violations of US sanctions laws and regulations. Participated in fact-finding efforts, client briefings, interviews, and productions and presentations to US authorities. Traveled extensively to client operations across Asia.
- Seconded to US-based multinational aerospace corporation to conduct post-acquisition Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) due diligence. Served as primary contact to the client. Oversaw fact-finding efforts and supervised teams of Clifford Chance attorneys across areas of focus. Led cross-border investigation into potential FCPA violations. Traveled to China to conduct in-person witness interviews.
- Advised Europe-based multinational metals and mining corporation on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) due diligence in advance of a large transaction for mining concessions. Participated in fact-finding efforts, client briefings, interviews, and report drafting.
